When does Toptal make sense for a founder?

Toptal is a talent and services business. It can connect you with people to work on software, design, marketing, product management and other specialist projects. The decision is whether its matching model fits your scope and budget, not whether a high-profile client logo guarantees your result.

For a straightforward marketing website, you may be able to use a website builder before commissioning custom development. For an app or a difficult integration, define what needs engineering work. A request to “build my startup” leaves too much uncertainty for a useful quote.

What does Toptal cost?

Toptal's client FAQ lists a $79 monthly platform subscription when you proceed with talent matching. That is separate from the expert's work. The FAQ does not specify the currency code or tax treatment, so confirm both in your offer.

Talent pricing requires a quote. Toptal's AI developer hiring page explains that scope, project complexity, expertise and engagement type affect the cost. An advertised salary or a rate from an old review is not your hiring price.

Check the subscription terms as well as the trial. The published platform terms require written cancellation notice at least three business days before the next billing date and no active engagement. Platform fees are generally non-refundable; if Toptal cannot present any talent, the terms allow a request for up to one month's platform fee on cancellation. Your agreement takes precedence where its terms conflict.

A complete quote should separate platform subscription + talent work + agreed project expenses + applicable taxes. Ask whether any advance payment or deposit applies, rather than assuming a universal deposit amount. Also ask which notice rules govern the work engagement; they are not automatically the subscription rules.

How does the talent trial work?

According to the client FAQ, a talent trial lasts up to two weeks. If you are satisfied, Toptal bills you for that time; if not, it says you are not billed for the trial work. This does not make accepted work free. The platform subscription and its cancellation/refund conditions are separate.

Before work begins, agree one small deliverable and how you will assess it. Confirm the actual deadline and method for communicating your decision. A vague feeling that a candidate is “good” is less useful than a working feature, reviewed design or documented analysis you can inspect.

What does Toptal's screening tell you?

Toptal says it accepts fewer than 3% of applicants. Its described process includes communication and skills checks, live exercises and test projects. That is an applicant-acceptance claim, not an independent finding that its network contains the best 3% of everyone in the profession.

Use screening as one input. Still ask about a candidate's relevant work, their role in it and how they would approach your constraints. For design work, discuss the user problem and decision process behind a portfolio piece. For engineering, discuss the integration, failure cases and maintenance your project needs.

What can Toptal help you build with AI?

Toptal offers AI engineers and AI services. Here, AI means expertise you can hire or project delivery you can commission. It is not a self-service AI app included in the platform fee.

Its GenAI offering covers areas such as model selection, vector databases, document processing and conversational AI. Those capabilities can be relevant when a prototype needs to become a working feature, or when a workflow must connect to an existing product.

Choose the delivery model deliberately. Adding a specialist to a team you manage is different from commissioning end-to-end delivery. Confirm who owns the architecture, project management, testing, release and support; a talent quote does not automatically include all of them.

Hypothetical founder project: add an AI-assisted support-reply draft to an existing web app. The first milestone could be a sandbox integration using anonymized sample tickets, with a human approving every outgoing response. Ask for representative evaluation cases, failure logs and setup notes. Check whether the system uses approved source material and escalates when it lacks enough information. Set your own acceptance thresholds; this example is not a Toptal test or a promised result.

Prepare the role before the matching conversation

Toptal offers engagements from hourly to full-time. Bring a defined scope into the conversation, including how much work is available and who will review it. Candidate availability and your requirements affect timing; fast-matching marketing is not a deadline for your finished project.

1. Define the first outcome. Describe a deliverable you can inspect, not just a job title.
2. Separate required and optional skills. Include the existing stack, dependencies and constraints that matter.
3. Get the complete quote. Confirm recurring charges, work commitment, expenses and decision deadlines.
4. Evaluate the proposed match. Ask about relevant work and walk through one realistic problem from your project.
5. Plan the first milestone and handover. Agree checkpoints, repository/account access, documentation and what happens if the match does not work.

Which alternatives should you compare?

Compare the hiring model and the work included, rather than treating every freelance service as the same product.

• Upwork: its hiring guide describes posting a role, reviewing proposals and interviewing, as well as pre-scoped Project Catalog packages. Consider it if you want to compare candidates yourself or buy a tightly defined piece of work. Assess the actual fees and quote.
• Fiverr Pro: it documents expert sourcing and end-to-end project management. Compare the proposed scope, delivery responsibility and price; this is not the same arrangement as adding one person to your team.
• An independent specialist: a direct relationship may fit when you already know the role and have a trusted candidate. You take responsibility for selection, the agreement and project management.

For a small task, first narrow it enough to compare a package or a short engagement. For a larger project, compare who manages the work and what is included. Neither a higher fee nor a screening claim establishes the best outcome for your specific business.

Questions to settle before hiring

Does “AI talent” mean I can buy a ready-made AI tool?

The reviewed offer is people and project services. Specify the workflow and integration you need. If a ready-made tool already solves the task, compare that option before paying for custom work.

Does screening remove the need to assess the candidate?

No. Your project may require a particular stack, working style or domain context. Ask for relevant evidence and use a small agreed milestone to assess the match.
