ChatGPT: Drafting Workflow, Pricing and Limits

ChatGPT can turn your own notes or articles into a useful first draft. Start with one clear deliverable and check what it actually returns: in our small writing pilot, a complete-looking answer still left out two requested posts.

Give ChatGPT a draft you can judge

ChatGPT is OpenAI’s general-purpose AI assistant. For a founder or creator with an article, a transcript or a set of notes, a useful first job is to turn that material into a draft for a particular reader. Start there if you already use ChatGPT. A second writing subscription needs a reason beyond a more polished first paragraph.

It fits work where you can supply the substance and check the result. It’s a weaker starting point when you need original reporting, verified customer insight or a finished media edit. Rewriting a transcript does not cut the recording.

Why it’s here: Sebastian confirms that he uses and personally recommends ChatGPT. The observations below come from a separate Codex-run editorial pilot, not from an account of his personal workflow.

A complete-looking answer can still omit the work

On October 4, 2026, Codex ran three ChatGPT writing tasks using two original AI-assisted editorial examples. Each requested one newsletter and three distinct posts. All three newsletters met the requested length; two responses supplied all three posts. The third supplied only one.

That third response ended with an audit naming three post ideas, although two of the posts were absent. The copied response was checked against the actual browser response. The useful distinction is between a plan for the work and the work delivered.

Requested: one newsletter + three posts.
Delivered in that response: one newsletter + one post.
What to check: count the finished drafts, rather than trusting the assistant’s closing audit.

The visible setting was Instant. The underlying model and account plan were unverified. These were fresh chats outside Projects, with no retries; memory and custom instructions were not inspected. The source texts were editorial fixtures, not Sebastian’s historical writing or customer research. This small, dated observation does not establish current model performance or measured time savings.

Use a small brief, then inspect the deliverables

Choose one source you own and remove private details before sharing it. Tell ChatGPT who the reader is, the one useful point to carry over and the exact output you need. The copyable writing brief gives you a starting point.

  1. Count the outputs. For a newsletter and three posts, look for four finished pieces. An outline or an angle map does not replace a missing draft.
  2. Check the facts. Trace names, quantities, promises and examples back to the source. Ask for gaps to be flagged, not filled with plausible details.
  3. Read each piece on its own. A post should make sense without the newsletter. Then read the set together and remove repeated angles.
  4. Keep the correction. Save the original response beside the edited version and note the fix. That gives the next brief a specific improvement to make.

If two outputs are missing, ask for those two explicitly and review them under the same rules. We did not test that repair in the pilot; it is a suggested next step, not an observed recovery result.

Pay for a limit you actually reach

OpenAI’s official plan reference, checked October 20, 2026, lists Free at $0, Go at $8/month and Plus at $20/month. Pro starts at $100/month, with $100, $200 and $500 USD options. This is a subscription reference, not a per-draft allowance. Check the offer, currency, tax and limits in your account; API billing is separate.

For a simple budget, divide the subscription cost you assign to this work by the packs you actually accept. Hypothetical example: $20 allocated to four accepted packs is $5 per pack before your editing time. It is not a measured ChatGPT production cost. If you use the same subscription for other work, choose an allocation that reflects that use rather than charging the whole fee to every workflow.

Try the account you have first. If you regularly hit a specific limit while producing work you want to keep, check the next plan against that limit. Our pilot did not measure each plan’s capacity.

Make the next draft the decision

Use one real source, keep the original response and mark what you had to repair. Continue if the edited result is worth using and the review work fits your schedule. For structured search-content optimization, Surfer is a different kind of option; a general writing assistant alone does not establish a search-content plan.

Next step: prepare the writing brief, then use the Try ChatGPT button to work on one bounded draft. The provider link is direct and carries no affiliate referral.
