AI Text Generators for Drafts, Rewrites and Content Work

An AI text generator can turn notes into a draft, shorten a long explanation or reshape an article for another format. ChatGPT and Claude are sensible starting points for that work. If you already use one, try a real writing task there before paying for another subscription. Consider Surfer when the job is a recurring search-content workflow with optimization guidance.

Choose the work before the subscription

A newsletter draft and a search-content editor solve different problems. Use the table to shortlist a workflow, then give it one source and one clear writing brief.

Surfer SEODraft or refresh search-focused articles with content-optimization guidance.Discovery: €588 paid upfront per year for 120 documents, shown as €49/month with yearly billing. You still need sources and editorial judgment. Discovery has no AI prompt tracking; a content score does not guarantee rankings.

ChatGPT and Claude plan references checked October 20, 2026; Surfer reference checked October 18, 2026. Dollar displays and the EUR Surfer display are separate price references, not a combined stack budget. Confirm billing currency, taxes, renewal terms and required extras in your account. We have not measured how many finished writing tasks each plan covers.

Sebastian personally recommends all three tools. The selection combines that recommendation with current documentation and the limited writing observations explained below.

Recurring search-focused articles and content refreshes
Surfer SEO

Overview

Surfer combines a Content Editor with AI assistance and plan-dependent optimization and visibility monitoring. Shortlist it for an existing article pipeline where someone can judge the suggestions.

Use the worked budgets and article review sheet to check peak document use, the billing commitment and the work left for you.

Pricing

EUR annual display checked October 29, 2026: Discovery €49/month equivalent, €588 upfront for 120 documents/year; Standard €99 equivalent, €1,188 upfront for 360; Pro €182 equivalent, €2,184 upfront for 360. These are yearly subscriptions, not monthly billing quotes. Confirm current monthly offers, currency, tax, renewal terms and required features in checkout.

Key Features

  • Content Editor guidance and AI article generation share a document allowance; each successfully created editor counts once.
  • Surfy rewrites, summarizes and formats selected text using a separate token allowance.
  • Brand Knowledge supplies business context when enabled before editor creation.
  • Content Score and Facts support review; they do not verify claims or guarantee rankings.
  • Auto-Optimize, AI visibility tracking and MCP access depend on the plan.

My take

Shortlist Surfer when you have search-focused articles to draft or refresh and can review its suggestions. Match the features to the task, then count both annual usage and the busiest month. The budget examples and copyable article review sheet help you evaluate that decision without treating a higher score as a business result.

Check a finished piece, not just a fluent opening

A polished paragraph can hide an incomplete assignment. In an October 4, 2026 repurposing pilot, Codex collected six responses across ChatGPT and Claude. Each task requested a newsletter and three posts. One response supplied only one post, while its closing audit referred to pieces that were missing. Another added a precise number and a motive that the source did not establish.

The practical lesson is to review two things separately: did the tool deliver the requested work, and did it preserve the source? Count the pieces before polishing sentences. Then check numbers, names, explanations and examples against the input.

That pilot used two original, AI-assisted editorial sources. The visible settings were ChatGPT Instant, with plan and underlying model unverified, and Claude Opus 5.5 Medium/Manual with Pro shown. Settings and paste handling differed, and account personalization was not inspected. These are dated observations by Codex, not Sebastian’s personal test or a current product ranking. Editing time and business results were not measured.

A writing brief you can reuse

Choose material you own and are comfortable sharing with the provider. Replace the brackets, paste the source and ask for one manageable batch. This brief adapts the pilot’s source and completeness checks; it has not been run as a new product test.

Use only the source below as the factual basis.

Reader: [one specific audience]
Purpose: [what the reader should understand or do]
Voice: [a short example and three writing rules]

Create one newsletter draft and three distinct posts.
Give each piece a different useful angle.
Preserve qualifications and uncertainty in the source.
Do not add numbers, motives, anecdotes or results.
Flag gaps instead of filling them with invented details.

List the deliverables you actually supplied.
I will check that list against the complete response.

SOURCE:
[paste your owned material]

A small edit that protects the meaning

Imagine these notes from a founder: “Several customers asked whether a plan could pause. We have not built that feature.” This is a hypothetical editorial example.

Reject: “Five customers wanted a pause option to cut their costs.” The number and reason are invented.

Keep: “Several customers asked about pausing a plan. The feature is not available yet.” The wording changes while the evidence stays intact.

Use the same check on your draft. A more confident sentence is not an improvement when it changes what you can support. Read the complete piece for repeated angles and phrases you would never use, then decide whether the edited result is useful enough to publish.

When a search-content tool earns its place

ChatGPT and Claude can help with drafting and rewriting. Surfer adds a structured content-optimization workflow. That distinction matters when you regularly maintain search-focused articles; it adds little to a one-off email that does not need search guidance.

Start with the article’s reader question and your own sources. Assess each optimization suggestion on whether it improves the answer. Use the Surfer budget examples and one-article checklist to match the document allowance and billing commitment to your workload.

Before you pay for another writing tool

Run one source through the assistant you already have. Record missing deliverables, unsupported additions and the editing you needed. If a specific plan limit prevents useful work you want to repeat, check the upgrade that addresses it. If the source lacks a useful idea or sound evidence, another subscription will not supply them.

Conclusion

Start with the writing brief and one piece of your own source material. Keep the source beside the edited draft so you can check each specific claim.
